Brassmania at Lightovation!!
Lightovation, formerly known as the Dallas International Lighting Market, is the largest domestic lighting show in the United States – showcasing the newest and brightest of decorative and architectural lighting. Every year over 100 of the top lighting companies release their designs on one of lighting’s grandest stages, establishing new fashions or endorsing the continuation of current trends.
Over the last few years we have not seen a clear favorite in the demand for any certain metal finish, even more so we are living in an eclectic period of finish mixing. It’s not uncommon to see a bathroom or kitchen utilizing multiple finishes in a design scheme, in most cases more than two. In the past, matching finishes was a sign of a very well executed and loyal design scheme, now it seems to be indicative of a flat and uninteresting space. And that’s when brass got hot. The indisputable finish dujour at the Dallas Market Center in 2018 was brass!
Yes, gold was said to be popular a few years back, and then we saw lots of copper getting attention, but now the reign of brass has begun and this is a trend that should have a decade of legs, yes brassmania has landed. One of the reasons brass has some durability is because of the many shades of brass we saw. Outside of the painted brass finishes which were plentiful, it seemed as though every manufacturer was trying a different hue, and what’s wrong with that? Nobody is planning on matching an entire room in brass anyway, accents here and their mixed together seem to be the hot pop that is usually the role of color. Thus we witnessed: antique brass, raw brass, aged brass, painted brass, glossy brass, flat brass, gold brass, dark brass, weathered brass, and of course lots of fake brass, lol. So where can brass work in your place or your next project? Check out our Brassmania collection from Lightovation 2018!
Aged Brass – Monorail/Modernrail Chandelier
Tech Lighting is North America’s leader in architectural track lighting systems. Tech’s low-voltage monorail track has been the most innovative track lighting solution since, well, track lighting:) The original finishes were satin nickel and chrome, satin nickel has historically been the most popular. 15 years ago when bronze started to heat up, Tech Lighting introduced their antique bronze finish then changing to just bronze. It was in high demand and has since peaked and flattened. The new call now is the release of Aged Brass monorail track. Not only did Tech Lighting introduce this new finish, they also decided to formally playoff their monorail product into a new product called the Modernrail Chandelier. It’s not the first time Tech Lighting has used Monorail for a “fixture” but in the past it was more a build your own solution which required some thought and design. The new Modernrail Chandelier seen below is one sku with a choice or two, but out of the box it’s brass and it’s complete! Interestingly though the Aged Brass Monorail will only be available with fixtures and not as a stand alone aged brass system….yet.
Aged Brass – Track Lighting and Monopoint Track Heads

Aged Brass – Chaos Chandelier by Modern Forms
Sculptural LED Chandelier formed with extruded channels and lensed to create a soft yet strong look. at 5′ wide this is an impressive collection of metal piano keys floating via aircraft cable. It’s fully dimmable and produces almost 3000 lumens of light, plenty for a great room or living room light fixture.
Etched Gold – Dot Chandelier by Blackjack Lighting
The Dot LED Chandelier was one of our favorite pieces of Lightovation 2018. We always love when the designer takes the time to really soften the light without compromising light output, and that’s what Stephen Blackman did with the 24 arms and reflectors. The inner ring of LED bounce of the reflectors essentially eliminating glare and creating soft modern light that is fully dimmable. Also available in chrome, the etched gold isn’t exactly brass but it’s close enough!
Satin Gold – Spectica LED Chandelier
Spectica is a great modern take on the traditional armed chandelier, utilizing LED lighting. The Spectica is integrated with adjustable arms and rotating LED heads that give it flexibility to conform to an office, foyer, or dining space. Also available in matte black finish and a larger size for conference room or a long dining table.
Polished Brass – Nolan Pendant from Arteriors
Modern mid-century inspired brass pendant, also available in vintage brass with bronze. Floating middle band adds dimension and contrast to the all metal spot drum shade. 21.5″ diameter is perfect for a simple round kitchen table or bedroom shade light. Built for one light bulb and chain hung.
Antiqued Burnished Brass – Ohhh Darlana!
The Darlana family designed by E.F. Chapman, for Visual Comfort, was possibly the most popular pendant family for 2017 and the look doesn’t seem to be getting old. Building on this success, Visual Comfort released not only a few more different size variations but also released the Darlana in the hottest finish today, brass. The difference is that the brass Darlana fixtures are made of solid brass that is burnished and not plated like their Polished Nickel, Antique Nickel, and painted like Aged Iron. Thus, the price is substantially more, but the quality of the material and craftsmanship is superb!
Solid Brass – Viaggio Ceiling from Tech Lighting
We have boring ceiling cure! The Viaggio mixes some classic contemporary elements with mixed metals, creating an interesting and sophisticated ceiling light. At 22″ wide, it’s large enough for an entry way or master bedroom ceiling, and it can be clustered for a larger effect. Viaggio by Tech Lighting also comes in a wall sconce with smoked globes and a chrome finish. LED lamping is available.

Amber glass might be making a comeback and this hand-blown glass collection from Park City Utah has a very clear and airy opulent look unlike the dense and thick amber glass we have seen in the past. It’s not orange it is clear gold and what better way then to add metal brass hardware and a nostalgic bulb to complete the look!
